The Black Mariah Theater
The Black Mariah Theater (Kansas City) started off the night with some moody jazz rock. Their music makes me feel like I should be in a smokey jazz lounge sipping a cocktail. These sisters got the crowd grooving. This power duo writes music that makes breaking up feel good.
North by North
North by North (Chicago, IL) made for the second power duo of the night. North by North is a high energy band who rocked the crowd with their garage rock. This band has great chemistry on stage and pulls in the crowd for a little singalong. North by North creates community at their shows-Kendra always makes an effort to get to know the audience after shows making their band feel like a hometown band when they're in town.
Blue False Indigo
Blue False Indigo blew the crowd away with their tight harmonies. There music was a big shift from North by North, but the crowd ate it up. Their three voices and minimalistic instrumentation pack a powerful punch. After the Flood was my favorite song of theirs.
