Folk Alliance International just got brand new headquarters and what a better way to make use of their new office space then to turn the empty room with a stage and create a showcase of some of Kansas City's finest folk. Last night John Keck played with Shannon O'Shae starting off the series with two sets. There were so many things to love about this night. Fort Defiance, a husband and wife folk duo, recently released a new video to their song The Haunts of Youth. Full of raw emotion, The Haunts of Youth, show a relationship full of heartache, hurt and longing. Anyone who's ever been in a relationship where the bight and shiny newness wore away leaving only ache and longing can relate to this video. You can hear each voice holding onto an untrusting hope for better days. There is a sweet melancholy to this haunting song. Thi
Even though I just saw Kelly Hunt (Kansas City) in a private showcase the night before I had to see her again. Kelly's voice has a sweetness and a clarity they works happiness into the corners of the heart. Stas' and Kelly are a power duo not to be missed. Emily White (Chicago) mixes folk, blues, and rock for a captivating set. Riley Downing (Holt, MO) playing the blues. Kelly Werts (Fairway, KS) having fun playing spoons in the family room at Folk Fest. The audience was re
Kasey Rausch (Kansas City) and Kyle Reid (Oklahoma) played a set in the KC Music Collective room. Kasey usually plays with Marco in The Country Duo, but Marco was unable to attend. Shannon's fiddling was on fire and Josh's guitar was full of soul. This duo was unstoppable. En
Abbie Gardener (Jersey City, NJ) played some fiery blues on her a dobro with her smoldring voice. In the Willows (Waterford/Dublin, Ireland) is a six piece alternative folk band. Close your eyes and they will transport you a place of peace and calm. Even in their songs of heartache, there is beauty. Boogát's (Montreal, Canada) Latin music blends Cumbia, Reggaeton, Salsa, and Hip-hop. Their presence on stage commands attention. This is music to put your dancing shoes on for
Thursday, February 15, 2018 was another night of incredible music band after band. I Love KC Music was able to catch some incredible bands. Check it out! Up first was Rosie & the Riveters (Saskatoon, SK), a vintage inspired folk band with a contemporary feminist twist. They played lots songs from their upcoming album Ms. Behave. Their song I Believe You, a song for survivors of sexual assault brought tears to my eyes. They brought the crowd back up with a call of power to
